THE SCI-FI HORROR KNOWN AS "CLASS OF 1999"! - 1990 FOLLOW-UP TO 'CLASS OF '84' BY MARC LESTER

Class Of 1999 is not nearly as good as it's predecessor (Class Of '84) but tries hard and is still an entertaining b-flick Three robot teachers programmed to maintain order in a rough school turn out to have just a few glitches as they go a little further than the school administators had in mind. There is a subplot involving two gangs this time instead of one, and the first 20 mins or so are a bit slow but from then on the film keeps turning up the volume similar to the first movie. We also have a few more recognizable faces this time including Pam Grier and Malcolm McDowell. One of the things that made the first one so good imho was the intense conflict between teacher and brat and the casting of those two characters. This one never gets to that level but is still a fun flick. Using my Pinewoods Rating System, I give Class of 1999 Two & 3/4 Pinewoods....The Horror!!

House of Self-Indulgence: Class of 1999 (Mark L. Lester, 1990)

When I heard the line: "The year is 1999... there is no law" verbalized with a slightly robotic intonation, I half expected the thumping bass intro of a killer techno jam to immediately follow its utterance.

The Film Connoisseur: Class of 1999 (1990)
