ROY SCHEIDER PLAYS A GAME OF "52 PICK-UP"! - 1986 BLACKMAIL THRILLER AN UNDERRATED HORROR

"HELLOOOO, SPORT!"
Slightly underrated this one, but not everyone can always get into sleazy characters in the pornography world. A box office loss and mostly shunned by the critics (except Roger Ebert) there's really quite a lot to admire here- an Elmore Leonard adaptation, LA scenery, veteran directing, and five-star 100% spot-on casting. Which btw also includes the recently departed Vanity  and one of the all-time great bad-guy performances by John Glover, a multi-nominated Emmy winner who attacks his role with an intense but at the same time comically melodramatic stance. His way of calling people "sport" here and there thru the movie adds more uniqueness to his villainous role. Throw in a few brief cameos by Ron Jeremy, Amber Lynn & Jamie Gillis, all porn superstars at the time and we can only say one thing....The Horror!!

Robin's Underrated Gems: 52 Pick-Up (1986)

It seems that that every time we do a podcast, I always wind up kicking myself for forgetting to mention something. This week, we doesn't get the respect it deserves is because it was produced by the infamous Cannon Group.

52 Pick-Up Movie Review & Film Summary (1986) | Roger Ebert

The old golden age Warner Bros. crime dramas knew something that most modern movies have forgotten: Heroes are great, but a movie is only as good as its villain. John Frankenheimer's "52 Pick-Up" provides us with the best, most reprehensible villain of the year and uses his vile charm as the starting point for a surprisingly good film.
