WRAPPING THE WEEK UP WITH 'BLING RING 20 13!' - WHAT HAPPENED SOFIA? THE SHEER HORROR!

When I first heard Sofia Coppola would be doing a film based on the now legendary group of San Fernando Valley brats that like to rip off celebrity's houses, you could have peeled me off the ceiling. I figured she'd bring her unique touch to the story ya dig? Yikes, what a misfire. I just simply do not get why she chose to mega-glorify these punks and stick with that through the whole picture. Then there's the sloppy cops segment at the end which puts the final nail in. It is with sadness that using my Pinewoods Rating System, I give The Bling Ring and the Coppola name One Lousy Pinewood on an unkempt road.....The Horror!!

The Bling Ring Movie Review & Film Summary (2013) | Roger Ebert

In Sofia Coppola's unvarnished and occasionally problematic account of a string of burglaries committed by LA teenagers in 2008 and 2009, the opening credits identify "The Bling Ring" as "based on actual events," instead of using the more common phrase "based on a true story"; this might seem like a minor distinction, but it's an important one, because "story" implies a certain structure and viewpoint.

Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" - The New Yorker

When it comes to teen-agers living in high style thanks to plunder, the five California teens of "The Bling Ring," Sofia Coppola's latest film, have nothing on Marie Antoinette and her entourage. As for the sumptuous aesthetic delights-and the soul-stripping alienations-of the Hollywood celebrity life, Coppola worked with those themes more fully and deeply in her previous film, "Somewhere."
