Jon Voight goes off the chart in his performance as the intelligent, affable "Conrack," a teacher dispatched to a remote impoverished part of South Carolina. A film that more than stands the test of time, it's a downright shame it was never nominated for anything. You can read some real reviews below but if you've ever thought of being a teacher, much less become one, this is a must-watch, but it's also a must for lovers of good movies. This one gets our rare award of Five Tall Pinewoods....The Horror!!

Considering the number of rather reactionary movies we've had lately-cops rampant on a field of crimson, women portrayed as doormats or handy trulls, nostalgia as a device for perverting the past-Martin Ritt's "Conrack," which opened yesterday at the Trans-Lux East and Loews Ciné, is worth welcoming for its intentions.

Southern novelist Pat Conroy has enjoyed a productive relationship with Hollywood; of the four theatrical features adapted from Conroy's books, one is a glossy, Oscar-nominated melodrama (1991's The Prince of Tides), one is a respected character study that also received Oscar-nomination love (1979's The Great Santini), and only one is middling (1983's The Lords of Discipline).
