BOINGO-TOBER 5! - DAY 4 COVERS 4TH ALBUM, THE HORROR KNOWN AS "DEAD MAN'S PARTY RELOADED"

Boingo's 4th album ushered in a whole new era for them- a new record label, a far less punky, radio-friendly sound, and a new bass player that in this fan's opinion would go on to prove himself an absolutely invaluable contribution to the band. We'll be talking more about Mr John Avila later in the month and what he's up to these days. Dead Man's Party is not necessarily a hardcore Boingo fan's typical favorite but it sure is their most accessible, Here we go with....
DEAD MAN'S PARTY RELOADED
WHAT I LOVE - The fact that this album landed up carving it's own special niche as a Halloween must, all by itself. Over time it has not become dated but more and more enjoyable and that's a pretty cool thing.
WHAT I HATE -  "Stay" and the fact that it got such strong airplay, there are lots of better songs on this album.
WHAT ASTROLOGICAL SIGN I THINK THIS ALBUM WOULD BE - Capricorn
WHAT TIME OF DAY IS BEST TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM - Anytime AFTER dark.
BEST SONG - I'd have to go a 2-way tie between Just Another Day and Noone Lives Forever with Help Me a very close 2nd
WORST SONG - Weird Science, also my absolute least favorite Boingo tune period.
BEST DRUG TO TAKE WHILE LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM - That would be Ecstacy
BEST PERSONAL MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ALBUM - I can't remember!
TONIGHT'S BOOTLEG OFFERING
HOLLYWOOD PALACE 1985
An obscure one here for sure, a cassette swipe from a soundboard but B grade in it's overall sound. Hardcore fans will probably dig, more notes below from the original trader I got it from....The Horror!! Set List 7daylink Rating B
"This is clearly a soundboard recording, but it has aged a bit. Still sounds fantastic, despite a tiny bit of wear and analog presence. The performance is phenomenal. Recording cuts off abruptly after No One Lives Forever, so it's unclear whether this is complete or not, but it's certainly long enough to be. The only other issues are quick clicks that happen between some songs, either to remove commercials, or to fix a TAO. It isn't distracting, and this show rules just the same. If you love Boingo, look no further." - fan's review

OH NO, IT'S "DIXIE DYNAMITE" RUN FOR YOUR LIVES! - 1976 DRIVE-IN FLICK W WARREN OATES THE HORROR

Hard not to like this drive-in fare, it's got action, chases, girls, bank robberies, AND Warren Oates to boot. It's a fun one! Pinewoods Rating System - Two & 3/4 Pinewoods - The Horror!!

Hicksploitation Movie Night # 2 - Dixie Dynamite 1976

I admit I started Dixie Dynamite with pretty high hopes. Directed by exploitation guru Lee Frost (Black Gestapo. Policewomen, Love Camp 7, plus tons of others), co-written by his frequent collaborator & producer Wes Bishop and starring one on my favorite actors - Warren Oates.

Dixie Dynamite (1976)

The rampaging-rednecks genre took a distaff turn in the mid-'70s, resulting in lowbrow pictures along the lines of Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw (1976), 'Gator Bait (1974), and The Great Texas Dynamite Chase (1976).

TONIO K 1988! - REVISITING THE HORROR KNOWN AS "NOTES FROM THE LOST CIVILIZATION"

Greetings all - I've had the distinct pleasure thru the years to have seen Tonio K (aka Steve Krikorian) many times live, acoustic and with band and also had the pleasure of meeting this incredibly prolific songwriter upstairs at McCabes. Some great music on this, a very overlooked album. How does Jim Keltner on drums sound? How about T-Bone Burnett on a variety of guitars and twisting knobs? And Charlie Sexton singing duet on the ultimate song about the devil called The Executioner's Song....The Horror!!

64. Notes From the Lost Civilization - Tonio K

NOTES FROM THE LOST CIVILIZATION (1988) Tonio K Tonio K released two albums for the Christian market in the mid 80's on What? Records. Both of them reach the Top 100 on this list. Both a must own album and truly brilliant works. Both are completely different musically and differ greatly in topic and theme....

BOINGO-TOBER 5 JUST GETTING WARMED UP WITH DAY 3 & IT'S "GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL!" - THE HORROR

Greetings once again my friends - Tonight we have a double entry for Boingo-Tober 5, first up is "Good For Your Soul Reloaded" Boingo's incredible 3rd album, and then a brand new "bootleg single" of a rare version of Kiss My Ass in Mesa, Arizona 1994, It's a mediocre audience capture but I did the best I could with it to enhance the sound. In other news- those of you that know me well must know that this whole blog list widget thing isn't sitting well with me. So here's the first rumblings of new design possibly coming soon. There's so many fine templates available from Google's various competitors that it makes them look like the idiots they are. Imo there's just no excuse for losing everybody's blog lists like that.....The Horror!!

GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL RELOADED
WHAT I LOVE - My top #1 favorite. The opening triple punch of Who Do You Want To Be, Good For Your Soul, and No Spill Blood is unparalleled in any other album and it just keeps that tempo up all the way thru the album closer, a punk/ska firecracker called Little Guns.
WHAT I HATE - On this album, nothing!
WHAT ASTROLOGICAL SIGN I THINK THIS ALBUM WOULD BE- Aries
WHAT TIME OF THE DAY IS BEST TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM - Mid-morning to Noon!
BEST SONG - So many great ones but I would have to pick No Spill Blood.
WORST SONG - Pictures Of You but still come on!
BEST DRUG TO TAKE WHILE LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM - That would be speed.
MY BEST PERSONAL MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ALBUM - I once auditioned for a Boingo cover band called Dead Man's Party as bass player, It was around 2000 but I had to learn quite a few off this album for the audition and I remember practicing and realizing that this stuff was much harder to learn than thought!

"TWO WHISKY'S PLEASE"
Here is a self-compiled bootleg I made from two different cassette source tapes which I obtained from the Secret Society (original Oingo Boingo fanclub). Both shows were partial shows and both were recorded at the Whiskey so I put them both together on one CD and called it "Two Whiskeys Please" The sound quality is almost identical on both shows, in fact, you would probably just think it's one show. It's typical B+ audience stuff for the time period. There are 14 songs total and there are some very classic early Boingo tunes here including the very rare song "I Have To Be Entertained" and a very early version of "Little Guns" which Danny says on the tape he hasn't even decided what to call yet!

CALLING THE WEEK A WRAP WITH LED ZEPPELIN 1971! - "GOING TO CALIFORNIA" 2-LP BOOT THE HORROR

The William Stout artwork on this TMOQ release late '71 is one of his least seen but as usual a great piece, one of my favs. The vinyl rip here is from copy above which someone wrote LA Forum on, an initial misconception about this boot recorded in Berkeley about 3 weeks after the Forum gigs that year, A big favorite of mine, especially of the TMOQ releases, it's an excellent audience recording, nicely assembled and the 24 minute version of Whole Lotta Love medley that takes up all of side 4 is a real barn burner.....The Horror!! 7daylink Rating A

LED ZEPPELIN 'Going To California' on CBM + Led Zep Updates

I don't think I have posted these yet. First released by Dub on TMOQ in February of 1973 late 1971 - as a companion piece to Crosby Nash's "A VERY STONEY EVENING" - and subsequently copied by CBM on the East Coast after that. BOINGO-TOBER 5 NIGHT TWO! - THERE'S "NOTHING TO FEAR" BUT FEAR ITSELF RELOADED - THE HORROR!

NOTHING TO FEAR RELOADED:
WHAT I LOVE - Everything! They nailed the production this time, more organic and fitting to their sound. Artwork is also awesome and Grey Matter?! One of the great Boingo tunes of all time.
WHAT I HATE - The little intro before Why'd We Come, can't explain why, just never liked it.
WHAT ASTROLOGICAL SIGN I THINK THIS ALBUM WOULD BE - Taurus
WHAT TIME OF THE DAY IS BEST TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM - Mid-afternoons!
BEST SONG - Grey Matter, Insects and the title track would be in the running and I've always dug Running On A Treadmill, a overlooked tune to say the least.
WORST SONG - Can't think of one, although I never really dug the long version of Private Life, the shorter edit is much better.
BEST DRUG TO TAKE WHILE LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM - That would be THC.
MY BEST PERSONAL MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ALBUM - I was working in an office, quiet mellow environment and KROQ was always on in the background (most offices that year did!) and Jed The Fish came on and said he was debuting the new 2nd album and I dashed across 5 desks in roughly 1.5 seconds and turned up the new tune. Caused a bit of a scare.

CHRIS COOPER IS RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR IN "SILVER CITY"! - 2004 JOHN SAYLES INDY-HORROR

Darrah Hannah, a true Saggitarius. From the brilliantly talented John Sayles comes this 2004 indie, political satire woven in with his usual character-driven story. Darryl Hannah is outstanding in her role but so is every cast member, an exquisite list of names in this one. Danny Huston gives an Oscar-worthy performance and it's great to see Richard Dreyfuss in something again, also great in his role. Sayle's story and script keeps the propaganda in check so the actor's performances can shine thru with their character's specific nuances, another thing Sayles is a master at. You can read some real reviews below, Pinewoods Rating System, a very worthy Three & 1/2 Pinewoods....The Horror!!

Silver City Movie Review & Film Summary (2004) | Roger Ebert

John Sayles' "Silver City" can be read as social satire aimed at George W. Bush -- certainly the film's hero mirrors the Bush quasi-speaking style -- but it takes wider aim on the entire political landscape we inhabit.

Silver City (2004)

My message to the criminals is this: you straighten up or get out. There's no place for you in our state. You do the crime, and by God, you're gonna have to face your lumps. -Dicky Pilager (Chris Cooper), Silver City We didn't know, until his wife told us, that [Chris Cooper] did a very credible George Bush imitation, sometimes to torture her.

BOINGO-TOBER 5! - "ONLY A LAD RELOADED" AS WE KICK OFF W 9 DAYS/9 ALBUMS - THE HORROR!!

Welcome to Boingo-Tober 5!
The first 9 days we'll cover the 9 official full albums, "reloaded"
If you look in the center of his chest, just to the left, you’ll see the cat from the EP’s cover the year before.
WHAT I LOVE - The songs, oh the songs! They were playing so many new songs at gigs, we were surprised and a little let down at only 10 songs.
WHAT I HATE - The production. Way over-produced. IRS Records would land up doing the same with the first FEAR album, to even worse detriment.
WHAT ASTROLOGICAL SIGN I THINK THIS ALBUM WOULD BE - Saggitarius
WHAT TIME OF THE DAY IS BEST TO LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM - Morning!
BEST SONG - Yikes, gotta go with What You See
WORST SONG - Yikes again, the version of Only A Lad. Totally unnecessary and the EP version was way better.
BEST DRUG TO TAKE WHILE LISTENING - That would be cocaine.
MY BEST PERSONAL MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ALBUM - Was going to a lot of Whisky shows during this time. One night I took a friend with me who had just rolled into town from Indiana. As usual the place was packed and we had to opt for standing on the big stairs. About halfway thru the show, I looked to my left to see how he was enjoying it and his gaze towards the stage and audience was one of complete shock, deer in the headlights!
BEST BOOTLEG ASSOCIATED WITH THIS ALBUM - Westlake High School 1980 (This show actually took place before the album came out but has quite a few numbers from it including the awesome version of You Really Got Me.

BOINGO-TOBER 5 KICKS OFF! - TWO VERSIONS THIS YEAR, ONE USUAL AND ONE TUMBLR - THE HORROR

Greetings all - In April of 1991 I took a picture of myself leaning down against the back of my brand new red Honda CRX (anyone remember those?) with a license plate OINGOBO clearly visible next to my smiling face. After it was developed (remember that?) I taped the picture to a piece of blank white copy paper and drew a circle around it and wrote in big letters "L.A.'s biggest Boingo fan" and under it "you need to have me on your show." and faxed it over to KROQ & Richard Blade. The response was fast, a day or two at most and next thing I knew I was sitting next to Richard Blade and spinning tunes with him on his lunchtime show as "LA.s biggest Boingo fan." It was so much fun and I must have gotten 25 calls the whole rest of the afternoon from friends, "we heard you on the radio" blah blah.

My love affair with the band started back in 1979 when I was a music major at Los Angeles City College. Lots of other friends around at that time, a lot of them very talented, are no longer with us.
The rest is history and I'm not a great writer so let's talk about this year's celebration!

TWO VERSIONS
ONE - The usual version here at THOH with one post a day mixed in with all the other posts. That's right, one Boingo post every day for 31 days.
TWO - For the first time, a simultaneous Tumblr blog called "boingotober" , more of a streaming consciousness kind of thing will multiple posts daily. The daily post from THOH will appear on both versions and it probably goes without saying that the Tumblr version is for the hardcore Boingo fans that do not wish to navigate the treacherous waters of THOH.

Both versions will feature as always- stories, reviews, photos, links, unofficial live recordings, outtakes and more. From one Boingo fan to another, I sincerely hope u enjoy...The Horror!!
