Oh boy do I remember when this album came out!
I had started my first day at a new job and they 
gave me my own office off in a corner. It had
an FM radio so I made sure to dial up that
sucker to KROQ before sitting down at the
desk to do any work, ya dig me? A minute later
Jed The Fish came on between songs and said
he was about to spin a couple tunes off the
new Boingo album and Grey Matter came
on. Well not much work done that day,
always been a big fav, if I had to say #1
album it would be a toss-up between this
and Good For Your Soul. The production
on this was much more suited to the bands
sound and the songs well....The Horror!!

A completely unique band that draws on no roots of
anything particular, when I first heard this back in
'04 I described it as "Charlie Brown music meets
hip hop meets the cheerleading squad. Great stuff 
and amazing use of samples. This albums a winner
thru and thru. There are two other albums that 
followed but while decent neither comes even
close to capturing the energy of this one...The Horror!

BOINGO-TOBER DAY 3! - THE YEAR IS 1986 - GOODBYE DEAD MAN'S PARTY - HELLO SOAK UP SO MUCH PAIN

1986 was a very busy year for Boingo and Elfman, besides
doing the Back To School movie, there was touring and
roughly 5 months in the studio tracking what would
become "B-o-i-n-g-o" This also starts the next phase
of life for the band as it steered towards more melodic
material. This phase as I see it would last thru Dark
At The End Of The Tunnel and up to the change
in 1993. I was blessed to see them at year's end
in two shows at the Hollywood Paladium and
I have a ultra-rare boot of one of those nights
posted below. There's only one way to enjoy that
venue and that's PACKED. And that place was
packed with 5000+ out of control fans as
you'll hear on the tape the concert has to be
stopped several times as Danny tries to get
people to step back...It's the only way to fly!
There were just two official releases that year,
both vinyl and the early first single "Pain"

The only thing better than seeing a Boingo concert
was seeing TWO Boingo concerts in two nights!

'BOINGO-TOBER' DAY TWO! - TIME MACHINE STOPS AT 1993 - BAND DROPS THE OINGO FROM BOINGO!

Another year of very fond remembrance in the Boingo
story, this was the year that Danny scaled down the
band by dropping the horn section, but added a
rhythm guitar player to play with Steve. It was
well known that Danny was becoming very 
successful with the movie scores around this
time fetching a million per movie so the
handwriting was on the wall sort to speak. 
I alao went to a lot of shows that year up 
at the Warfield in SF and back home in LA
They played a two-night stand that summer
at the House Of Blues on Sunset and I was
up front for both incredible shows.
My roommates kidded me at the time when
they saw all the bruises on my arms from 
slamming...The Horror!!
Not surprising then that I have a few 93's in my bootleg collection to share with you Boingo-Zoid's
and always remember for trade only!

CLASSIC STONES VINYL BOOT! - "SMOOTH" ON THE TMOQ LABEL - HODGEPODGE OF VARIOUS HORRORS

This vinyl boot was released in '74 and the vinyl rip
here is from my pal Ed who bought the first pressing
with me that same year. Interesting hodgepodge of
some '66-67 TV stuff, some Exile outtake stuff
including the infamous "Blueberry Jam" 
and a rather large section of jamming from 
Sympathy For The Devil movie, pretty cool
listen all in all, maybe that's why they called
it Smooth, ya dig? The Horror!! 7daylink

"BOINGO-TOBER" KICKS OFF! - THE YEAR IS 1981 IN OUR OINGO BOINGO TIME MACHINE - THE HORROR!

Welcome to the 3rd Annual "BOINGO-TOBER"
For the next 17 days it's a virtual time machine
as we boingo around the years, glad to have you
aboard, hope you dig it...The Horror!!
If you look in the center of his chest just to the left, 
you'll see the cat from the EP's cover.
I decided to start with 1981 cause this was the year when
my love of the band really sky-rocketed. It's also the year
I saw them the most times at The Whisky and the year
I was 19, need I say more?
1981 is also the year us Boingo fans that had already been around a couple years got our first official album on A&M. At the time it came out a lot of Boingo fans had mixed reactions to the album especially the song selection. There were a few staple songs like Cinderella Undercover and Teenaged Monster that we really expected to see on there but were replaced by the very new tunes like Perfect System and Capitalism. My biggest and only complaint ever about this album was the production. It was cutting-edge at the time but way too polished and artificial sounding. IRS Records would land up doing the same thing and even worse to the first FEAR album which also hit around that time.
Nonetheless, Only A Lad deserves to be considered the new-wave classic it now is and a must-have starting point for fans new and old.

1981 is also the year the band was featured in an obscure film called Long Shot playing an even more obscure tune "I Have To Be Entertained" - The same year I saw them perform this song for the first time at the Whisky and was SO hoping it would be on Only A Lad. The scene from the movie is below and here is a 7daylink of the demo version, slightly different and tinny but the only recording out there. 

And then in the world of bootlegs, there's the "DREADED ROXY SHOW" as I like to call it full of frustration for the avid fan with tinny unbalanced soundboard cassette, hissy AND with several songs cut. The most frustrating part being you know this was a kill show. Anyways if you care to navigate the murky waters of Roxy 1981. here's a 7daylink for ya and the set list.
